For life

All alterations happen in the same workshop that builds our bespoke suits, by the same hands. That means a garment's construction is respected — original hems are retained where possible, reversible alterations are favoured, and if a garment cannot be improved enough to justify the cost we will tell you so up front. Maria leads women's and bridal fittings; David handles suits and formalwear. Standard turnaround is 1–2 weeks; rush work is available for wedding or court dates.

Have you ever pulled a favorite jacket out of the closet, only to realize it desperately needs alterations before you can wear it?

Business owners and homeowners alike know the frustration of an expensive wardrobe that sits unworn. We understand how crucial a sharp appearance is for your confidence.

Finding a reliable local tailor shouldn’t feel like a gamble. Our team is going to walk you through exactly how we handle your garments. Grab a cup of coffee, and let’s go over the details together.

All work done on-site

Every alteration happens in the same Fort Street workshop that crafts our custom suits. The exact same experienced hands perform the work. We never send anything out to third-party contractors. Your garment stays safely inside the shop at all times.

This local focus matters for two important reasons. First, a tailor who constructs suits from scratch knows exactly what the interior canvas is doing. We can accurately judge which seams can be let out and which shoulder adjustments actually work. Altering a fully canvassed jacket requires precision. Our specialists know exactly which tweaks are easy and which ones require rebuilding half the item.

Accountability is our second major priority. A 2025 report from the Drycleaning & Laundry Institute indicates that nearly 60% of standard dry cleaners ship complex alterations to off-site facilities. We eliminate that risk entirely. No shipping delays, no tracking nightmares, and no lost clothes will ruin your day.

Honest-advice policy

We frequently turn away work if it won’t meaningfully improve the garment. Most off-the-rack suit jackets only have about 1 to 1.5 inches of extra fabric at the seams. If a jacket’s shoulder is structurally flawed, or the chest is simply too tight to let out, we will tell you directly. The cloth might even be too fragile to handle new stitching. Our tailors evaluate these factors before you commit a single dollar.

You always leave with a transparent quote you can trust. Sometimes, a brand-new suit makes more financial sense than a costly reshape. We recommend checking out our comprehensive guide on which alterations are worth the cost. A landmark 2017 WRAP study found that extending clothing life by nine months reduces its carbon footprint by around 25%. Our team wants to help you save items when it counts, but we won’t waste your money on a lost cause. For a deeper look into fixing versus replacing, check out our thoughts on altering vs buying new.

Suit, dress, and formalwear alterations we take on

We handle a massive variety of clothing repairs and adjustments. High-quality garments require specialized tools like industrial Juki sewing machines and heavy-duty pressing irons. The right equipment ensures factory-level finishes on every hem and seam. Our shop regularly performs the following services.

  • Suit alterations, including sleeve length, waist suppression, and trouser tapers. We can tweak shoulder pads, adjust jacket lengths where possible, and fix the fit of a rental suit.
  • Women’s and bridal, covering wedding dress alterations, bridal bustles, and evening-gown adjustments. Business owners frequently bring in suit jackets for court and office wear.
  • Vintage and heirloom restoration, featuring invisible darning and exact button matching. Our specialists provide respectful restoration of a father’s or grandfather’s older suits. We see a lot of moth damage due to the coastal British Columbia climate, making these repairs incredibly popular.
  • Court and formal, handling barrister’s waistcoats, court robes, and judicial attire. Getting a tuxedo or black-tie outfit to fit perfectly is a routine task.
  • Quick hems and minor work, starting with pants hems from $20. Simple sleeve shortening and quick button repairs fall into this category too.

How long alterations take

Standard turnaround times usually run between one to two weeks. Complex bridal and multi-fitting work requires a longer timeline. You should plan to visit us six to eight weeks ahead of a wedding. Our staff knows that the peak British Columbia wedding season from May to September causes industry-wide delays.

Rush service is available for emergencies. We charge a 30 to 50% surcharge for last-minute court dates, weddings, and graduations. Simple hems can sometimes be finished on the same day if you arrange it prior to your visit.

Bridal and wedding parties

Maria leads every single bridal appointment personally. Wedding dress alterations are always booked as private sessions. We ask that you allow eight to ten weeks before the big date. A typical gown features three to five layers of heavy fabric, which means you should expect two to three separate fittings.

Our team also handles entire wedding parties. Groomsmen alterations for a group of four to six typically run four to six weeks from the initial fitting to the final pickup. We gladly coordinate out-of-town groomsmen using specialized remote measurement protocols. Stress often causes weight fluctuations of two to five pounds right before a wedding, making these final checks essential. You can see the full approach in our guide covering suit alterations for grooms and groomsmen.

A well-fitted outfit completely changes how you carry yourself. We want you to feel amazing in your clothing. Reach out to our shop today to schedule your next round of alterations. Our team is always here to help you look your best.

If alterations won't meaningfully improve the garment, we tell you so before you commit money. Some jobs we turn away.

03

On-site alteration

Every adjustment is performed at Fort Street by David (suits, formalwear) or Maria (women's, bridal). Nothing is sent out.

04

Fitting check

For waist suppression, jacket shape, and bridal bustles, a second fitting before you take the garment home.

Questions

Common questions

Will you tell me if alterations aren't worth the cost?

+

Yes. If the garment's construction cannot be improved enough to justify the price we say so at the fitting. We would rather lose a small job than spend your money on a garment that will never fit the way you want.

Do you offer rush service?

+

Rush is available when the schedule allows — typically turning a 1–2 week job into 3–5 days at a 30–50% surcharge. Let us know the event date at the first fitting.

Do you do women's tailoring?

+

Yes. Maria leads all women's tailoring and bridal fittings — wedding dress alterations, bustles, evening-gown adjustments, suit jackets for court and business.

Can you restore a vintage or heirloom suit?

+

Usually yes. We handle moth damage, invisible darning, button matching, and fabric fragility assessments. Fragile museum-quality pieces we may decline to alter, but we'll say so up front.

Can I alter a rental suit or tuxedo?

+

Minor adjustments yes (waist, sleeve length) with the rental shop's permission. Anything that leaves cut marks is usually not allowed on rental garments.
