The Challenge

Is the Drive from the Peninsula Worth It?

Off-the-rack doesn't account for real proportions

Industry sizing averages shoulders, chest, and waist across thousands of men. If your proportions differ from that average — and most do — every off-the-rack suit is a compromise. The shoulders pull. The chest gaps. Tailoring can fix some of that, not all of it.

"Custom" overseas isn't a relationship

Several retailers offer "custom" suits adjusted from a shared block in an overseas factory. You fill out a form, supply your own measurements, and receive one fitting at most. If the fit is wrong, your options are limited and there is no ongoing relationship with the person who made it.

The Vancouver alternative costs a working day per fitting

A proper bespoke suit requires three or more fittings. If the nearest qualified tailor is across the ferry, each appointment means a half-day or full day lost. Most clients on Vancouver Island end up settling rather than making that trip three times over six weeks.

The Process

How Fittings Work Across the Distance

01

Consultation

Free, 30 minutes. Discuss style, occasion, and timeline. Fabric library walk-through. No commitment required.

02

Basted Fitting

Three to four weeks later. The half-built jacket is tried on. Shoulder, chest, and waist are refined before final construction.

03

Collection

Final fitting and hand-over at six to eight weeks. Your hand-drafted pattern is kept on file for future commissions.

Local Expertise

Serving Sidney and the Saanich Peninsula

Sidney and the Saanich Peninsula sit roughly thirty minutes from our Fort Street workshop via the Pat Bay Highway. We plan each commission to minimise the number of round trips: a consultation and measurement in one visit, the basted fitting two to three weeks later, and collection at the final appointment.

The Peninsula demographic produces a disproportionate share of our vintage and heirloom restoration work. Inherited wool suits from the 1950s and 1960s -- often structurally sound but in need of careful resizing -- arrive regularly from clients in Downtown Sidney, North Saanich, and as far as Brentwood Bay. Catherine L., whose testimonial addresses her father's vintage suits, came from this catchment.

Airport-commuting professionals near Victoria International Airport find the tailoring relationship practical: a pattern on file means subsequent commissions require no additional measurement sessions, just a fitting appointment on a schedule that suits the drive.

Questions

Common Questions from Peninsula Clients

How do you organize fittings for clients making the drive from Sidney or North Saanich?

+

We plan each commission to minimise round trips. A consultation and measurement in one appointment, the basted fitting two to three weeks later, and collection at the final visit. Sidney clients using the Pat Bay Highway can cover a round trip in about an hour, so the schedule is manageable with advance notice of each stage.

Do you handle vintage and heirloom garments for Peninsula clients?

+

Yes. A significant share of our heirloom and restoration work comes from the Saanich Peninsula, including inherited wool suits from the 1950s and 1960s. We assess each piece at a no-charge appointment before taking on any structural work. When the cloth is too degraded to hold alterations, we say so rather than proceeding.

Can Saanich Peninsula brides schedule bridal fittings with Maria Finch?

+

Yes. Maria leads all bridal and women's fittings at the Fort Street workshop. For Peninsula brides making the drive from North Saanich or Central Saanich, we coordinate the fitting schedule to minimise round trips. Allow eight to ten weeks before the wedding date, and book the first appointment as early as possible given the driving distance.
